Access Free Supports in Canada: You have Rights

EmployAbilities for Newcomers is a free training program funded by IRCC that informs immigrant serving agencies and newcomers who have a permanent health condition.

In Canada a permanent condition includes invisible physical conditions: chronic pain, migraines, heart conditions, diabetes, and cancer (this is not a complete list). As well, mental conditions, that are also invisible, and include: stress/anxiety, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), depression, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Disabilities are common, according to StatsCan, 1 in 5 have a permanent or temporary condition yet most people do not know that free supports and accommodations are available to ease their integration in the workplace and in their daily lives.

Section 15 of the Canadian Charter Rights and Freedoms guarantees newcomers’ equality rights, and their right to apply for free grants to attend post-secondary education.

EmployAbilities’ training informs newcomers about their rights in plain language. The training is fast, usually completed in 4-5 hours, and does not conflict with any other training such as employment programs, LINC classes, or any bridging programs. It simply adds value and enhances the work of the settlement sector.
