Jane Legaspi: A Mentor Story

The Career Mentorship Program (CMP) matches newcomer immigrant professionals (mentees) in the Edmonton region with established professionals and local business leaders/employers (mentors) who share a similar occupational background and create networks through real-life connections and experience.

One of our mentors, Jane Legaspi, shares her experience:

"Be the kind of leader that creates other leaders"

“This is my main goal when I became a Mentor in ERIEC’s Career Mentorship Program. I want to empower individuals by leveraging their strengths, supporting their career development, and helping them grow by identifying their weaknesses.”

What I Like About Mentoring With ERIEC

“I love that ERIEC supports newcomers and my fellow immigrants. Many skilled, intelligent, hardworking, and diligent newcomers come to Canada. Some of them are doctors, experienced professionals, or managers, and many could not practice their profession when they arrived in Canada. This situation fills me with awe. This is why ERIEC’s mentorship program is very beneficial and vital. I love that I can help newcomers apply their careers in Canada.”

Mentoring Helps Professional Newcomers

“Mentoring helps professional newcomers by educating them about Canada's workforce and giving them essential information to get their foot in the door. Mentoring gives them tips and advice on how to create an effective resume & cover letter, how to prepare them for interviews, and how to retain a job. Aside from these, it also boosts their self-confidence and gives them hope for their career's future.”

Mentor Benefits of Volunteering

“Mentors, like me, become more confident and gain leadership skills. Before mentoring for ERIEC, I was a bit shy and insecure even after I achieved one of my career goals. Once the mentorship program started, I became more assertive, self-assured, and confident. I feel like I can become a manager, a better leader, and hopefully a CEO someday. ERIEC really contributed a lot to increasing my self-esteem. I could not be more grateful for ERIEC and this mentorship program.”
