Yesterday Aug 26th 2019, a group of representatives from immigrant service providing agencies participated in an immigration focused roundtable discussion on the Fair Registration Practices Act, organized by the Ministry of Labour and Immigration and hosted by NorQuest College.
This Act is the first step in Government of Alberta’s Fairness for Newcomers Action Plan and works to cut red tape, remove barriers, speed up the process where possible, and hold professional bodies accountable to increase fairness and transparency. The Government seeks to create more jobs, and deliver on fairness for newcomers entering the workforce, through initiatives like foreign credential recognition and the Fairness for Newcomers Act.
The Minister of Labour and Immigration Jason Copping wanted to hear from service providers about the challenges professional newcomers face in terms of credential recognition, as the Government endeavor to make registration practices more transparent, efficient and fair. We shared our views and perspectives with regards to the recently introduced legislation. Minister Copping was interested in our clients’ stories and what we see as being the key element to the success of this Act and making newcomers feel more welcome in Alberta.
